Mongolia requests Russia and China to resume the passenger train passing through Ulaanbaatar
According to TASS from the trilateral tourism meeting between Russia, China, and Mongolia, the Mongolian government has requested Russia and China to resume the regular railway passenger service on the Moscow-Ulaanbaatar-Beijing route. This line was suspended in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Minister of Culture, Sports, Tourism, and Youth Policy of Mongolia, Chimbatyn Undram, said: "During the pandemic in 2020, the international train from Moscow to Ulaanbaatar to Beijing was temporarily canceled. We kindly request Russia and China to consider resuming the regular railway passenger service on this route."
Since early January 2020, Russia suspended rail traffic with China due to the spread of the novel coronavirus, retaining only the Moscow-Beijing-Moscow route, and from February 3, all trains from Russia to China were completely suspended.
In mid-December 2024, the international train from the Russian Primorsky Krai to China and North Korea resumed operation. On March 3, 2025, China, after the pandemic, launched its first test-run Beijing-Ulaanbaatar-Moscow passenger train, which consisted of 12 carriages.
