GM CEO: "I don't think Chinese electric vehicles have a technological advantage!"

On June 15, South Korea's media "Seoul Economic Daily" published an article stating that Mary Barra, CEO of American General Motors Company, expressed support for U.S. President Donald Trump's auto tariff policy.

Recently, during an interview at an event, Barra claimed that foreign government subsidies and taxes put American car brands at a disadvantage.

Barra stated, "For decades, the global automotive market has not been a level playing field due to tariffs or non-tariff barriers. Therefore, I believe tariffs are one of the tools governments can use to create a fair competitive environment."

She added that her relationship with President Trump has improved.

From 2018 to 2019, General Motors became a target of then-President Trump due to its closure of American factories, layoffs, and introduction of electric vehicles.

In addition, Barra said she still remains committed to the goal of selling only pure electric vehicles one day, but she noted that the pace of transformation depends on the growth of U.S. emission regulations and battery charging infrastructure.

She said, "I believe it is possible to fully transition to electric vehicles. It depends on how well the infrastructure is prepared, but I believe we will eventually achieve this goal because I think electric vehicles are better."

At the same time, she does not believe that Chinese electric vehicles lead in technology; they are simply priced lower than American electric vehicles, and pointed out that China's advantage stems from its policies.

Barra emphasized, "Rather than saying Chinese electric vehicles have a technological advantage, it is more accurate to say that American companies are at a disadvantage in price competition under the circumstances of large-scale subsidies."
