Reference Message Network reported on June 15 that according to a report from Japan's Daily News website on June 14, Springer Nature, the publisher of the international science journal "Nature," recently released the 2025 ranking of contributions in high-quality research papers in the field of natural sciences. In terms of institutional rankings, eight Chinese institutions entered the top ten globally, taking an overwhelming lead; while the University of Tokyo dropped from 21st place last year to 23rd place this year, and Kyoto University fell from 47th place last year to 55th place, both setting historical lows.

According to the report, the investigation agency under Springer Nature has been releasing the "Nature Index" annually since 2014, from which these rankings are derived. The survey covers five major fields: physics, chemistry, biological sciences, earth and environmental sciences, and health sciences. It statistically analyzes the institutions and countries of authors whose papers were published in 145 well-known academic journals worldwide in 2024.

The report points out that due to the addition of the health sciences field starting in 2023, it cannot be directly compared with historical data. However, it is undeniable that Kyoto University fell out of the global top 50 for the first time, with both it and the University of Tokyo setting historical lows.

The report states that the Chinese Academy of Sciences ranked first in the Nature Index this year and last year, with Harvard University in the United States ranking second globally, and the University of Science and Technology of China ranking third. China's paper output increased significantly, with Zhejiang University rising from tenth place to fourth place, further enhancing its presence. Meanwhile, the Max Planck Society in Germany fell from fourth place to ninth place, with several institutions in Europe and America experiencing a decline in rankings.

Nature Index Editor Simon Baker pointed out: "In fields such as physics and chemistry, China has significantly surpassed the previous dominant European and American countries."

The report notes that in the national rankings, China ranks first globally, followed by the United States, Germany, and the United Kingdom in second, third, and fourth places respectively. As in the previous year, Japan continues to rank fifth globally. (Translated by Ma Xiaoyun)
