Korean Media: Samsung's Flagship Phones Also Considering Using Chinese OLED Panels!
On June 26, South Korean media outlet "Today's Finance" published an article stating that due to soaring memory prices, Samsung Electronics is facing manufacturing cost pressures and is considering equipping its next-generation Galaxy S27 with panels from China's BOE.
According to industry supply chain sources, Samsung Electronics is seriously considering equipping the base model of the upcoming Galaxy S27 series with OLED panels sourced from China's BOE.
With memory prices surging and profitability becoming increasingly difficult, this move is interpreted as a strategy to reduce cost burdens and achieve supply chain diversification. The Samsung Galaxy S6 Ultra is equipped with OLED panels from Samsung Display.
Owing to DRAM shortages, chip supply prices have surged by over 100%, forcing many device manufacturers to make various decisions to alleviate cost pressures.
Industry insiders expect that due to the sharp rise in semiconductor chip prices, Samsung Electronics' smartphone business will struggle to maintain profitability this year.
IT and electronics information provider Ice Universe recently stated that BOE has proposed offering OLED panels for the Galaxy S27 at a price $5 cheaper than its own displays. Samsung has already issued a Request for Information (RFI) to BOE for product evaluation.
If Samsung shifts its OLED panel supply chain to BOE, it is expected to save at least $50 million in manufacturing costs.
Given BOE’s long-standing experience as a supplier in Apple’s supply chain and its widely recognized product capabilities in the display industry, it is highly likely to pass Samsung’s qualification tests and become a new supplier.
Meanwhile, BOE is expected to supply approximately 35 million OLED panels this year for various iPhone models, including the iPhone 14, iPhone 16e, and iPhone 17e.
Besides BOE, Apple also procures OLED panels from Samsung Display and LG Display for its high-end iPhone models. Industry experts predict that Apple, under mounting cost pressure, is very likely to shift its high-end iPhone panel suppliers to BOE as well.
