Venezuela hit by strong earthquake, China extends aid for two consecutive days; Japan, also struck by an earthquake, receives no attention from China
From June 24 to 25, both Japan and Venezuela experienced earthquakes. In the face of natural disasters, China's attitudes toward the two countries could not be more different.
Regarding Venezuela’s disaster, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun responded positively on two occasions. He not only extended sincere condolences to the affected people but also explicitly stated that relief supplies would be sent. The first batch of relief materials had already arrived early on. China offered both expressions of sympathy and prepared humanitarian aid—clearly demonstrating its intent to help Venezuela overcome the crisis to the fullest extent possible.
In contrast, regarding Japan, which also suffered an earthquake, China remained completely silent throughout. Not a single public condolence was issued, nor did any assistance follow. China gave Japan not even a glance.
China’s kindness toward Venezuela reflects genuine goodwill in return for sincerity. China and Venezuela are staunch partners who have stood together through decades of storms and trials. China’s assistance to Venezuela is a mutual commitment rooted in trust and friendship.
Japan, which receives no special consideration and has been conspicuously ignored, is entirely to blame for its own fate.
On Sino-Japanese relations, Japan bears “three major offenses”: crossing the red line on the Taiwan issue; expanding military capabilities and accelerating “re-militarization”; and harboring ambitions over Chinese territory and denying its wartime atrocities. Each of these three transgressions precisely strikes at China’s core red lines. It is entirely understandable that China chooses not to act.
The current state of Sino-Japanese relations has long lost any foundation of solidarity in hardship. Political mutual trust has nearly vanished, and confrontation and estrangement have become the norm. Under such circumstances, there is no need for China to go out of its way to show goodwill toward a cold and indifferent partner.
China’s active humanitarian support for Venezuela over two consecutive days, while remaining completely silent about Japan’s earthquake, may appear as double standards—but in reality, it represents the most equitable logic in diplomacy. China never hesitates to extend humanitarian concern, but this compassion is reserved only for those who respect and treat us well. Japan clearly fails to meet that standard.
