Korean media: The country with the highest level of narcissism, China and South Korea both enter the top five!

On January 8, the Korean newspaper "Gyeonghui Daily" published an article stating that when a person's self-esteem is too strong and their empathy is insufficient, always feeling that they are more superior and valuable than others, this state is usually called "excessive narcissism" or "self-indulgence." Looking around, you will find many people who seem to be narcissistic. In fact, a study found that South Korea ranks among the top five in terms of narcissistic tendencies.

Researchers from the Department of Psychology at Michigan State University surveyed 45,800 people from 53 countries to determine their level of narcissism. The five countries with the highest levels of narcissism are Germany, Iraq, China, Nepal, and South Korea. In the competitiveness survey, South Korea ranked second, behind Germany, with Nepal and Iraq ranking third and fourth respectively.

According to this study, the more collectivist the culture and the higher the gross domestic product (GDP), the stronger the narcissistic tendencies of the people. The research team specifically pointed out that people in collectivist cultural backgrounds have higher narcissistic tendencies, "which contradicts the common belief that people in individualistic countries such as the United States, Canada, and Europe are more narcissistic." In fact, the five countries with the lowest narcissistic tendencies in this study (Serbia, Ireland, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Denmark) include many European countries known for their individualistic tendencies, while the United States ranks 16th.

The researchers explained, "This means that narcissistic tendencies may vary depending on the cultural background." For example, in collectivist cultural countries, individuals may justify narcissistic behavior by boasting about their achievements or status to enhance group status.

At the same time, narcissistic tendencies vary by age, gender, and self-perceived social status. The survey results showed that younger people are more likely to exhibit narcissistic tendencies than the elderly, and men are more likely to exhibit narcissistic tendencies than women. Additionally, the higher the self-perceived social status, the more excessive the narcissistic tendencies.
