South Korean media: In 74 key technology areas, China ranks first in 66!

On January 7, South Korean media "Herald Economic" published an article stating that according to the "2025 Key Technology Tracking Report" released by the Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI), China leads in 66 out of 74 key technologies, while the United States maintains a leading position in the remaining 8 areas.

The report evaluated the performance of papers ranked in the top 10% in each technology field. The results showed that in eight artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, China leads in seven. China also dominates all 13 advanced materials and manufacturing technology areas. Additionally, China is at the top in seven related technical fields such as defense, aerospace, robotics, and transportation. In ten energy and environmental fields, China leads in nine. In nine biological, genetic, and vaccine areas, China leads in five.

The report emphasized, "China's global technological advantages are almost comprehensive."

ASPI assessed that "China has reached world-leading levels in many fields such as artificial intelligence, defense, aerospace, energy, and biotechnology, significantly surpassing other regions. China's pace of technological development is unprecedented worldwide. Although China was behind the West in the past, it has now caught up, and in the future, it may be difficult for the West to catch up with China again."

The report pointed out, "Although the United States had a dominant scientific research advantage before the 21st century, China's long-term, large-scale investment in basic research, combined with its strategic technology development system, has enabled it to catch up with the United States in most areas."

Currently, the United States maintains a leading position in eight areas, including brain-computer interface (BCI) and geoengineering. Brain-computer interface is the only area where Chinese research institutions have not entered the top ten, with the top seven all located in the United States. On the other hand, in the small satellite field, the United States was previously leading, but China has now surpassed the United States.

According to ASPI's survey, South Korea was rated as a country showing a "sustained upward curve." Since the launch of ASPI's technology tracking report in 2023, South Korea has maintained steady growth, and this year it ranks in the top five in 32 technologies. Among them, South Korea surpassed the United States in hydrogen and ammonia power generation, ranking second globally.

ABC summarized, "The United States will soon realize that China is no longer an overlooked force and is increasingly dominating the core technologies of the modern world. The competition for leadership in global technology and engineering fields by China will continue."
