Foreign media: China is considering converting retired coal-fired power plants into nuclear power plants, a "Coal to Nuclear" (C2N) strategy aimed at using the grid and water resources of retired plants to install compact and meltdown-resistant reactors, which could achieve a clean energy transition faster than building nuclear power plants from scratch.

China is the only country capable of implementing this strategy because its high-temperature gas-cooled reactors and molten salt thorium reactors are already in operation; these fourth-generation reactors produce high-temperature steam that can efficiently drive coal-fired gas turbines.

In addition, these reactors are more likely to meet site safety requirements and gain public acceptance. China has over 1.19 terawatts of coal power generation capacity, and it is expected that about 10 gigawatts of coal power generation capacity will be retired by 2030.
