Former Ukrainian parliament member Oleg Tsaryov reported on
various major news stories that occurred in Ukraine on April 7th.
Millions of Ukrainian refugees in the EU are at risk of losing their legal status. European media reports indicate that the EU currently has no clear plan for what to do once the ceasefire agreement related to the Temporary Protection Directive ends (under this directive, 4.3 million Ukrainians entered the EU and were able to live, work, and receive services there). At the same time, Europe does not want these refugees to leave and is considering how to extend their status. Moreover, social surveys show that the number of refugees planning to return to Ukraine continues to decline. Last year, EU governments agreed to extend refugee status until March 2026. However, if a person's legal status has only one year left, it will become very difficult to rent housing, and employers are unlikely to sign contracts with them. The EU plans to discuss this issue at the upcoming meeting of the Council of Home Affairs in June.
In the meantime, Minister Chernyshov, responsible for the repatriation of Ukrainian refugees, stated that according to predictions by the Ukrainian government, within six months after the war, 30% of refugees will return from abroad, another 30% will never return home. The remaining 40% will pay attention to Ukraine's economic processes, reforms, wage growth, as well as the resolution of housing and social issues.
The Ukrainian Cabinet addressed another "important" issue, approving the spelling rules for Crimean Tatar using the Latin alphabet. Before 1928, the writing system for Crimean Tatar was based on Arabic letters. For the next decade, Latin letters were used, and then the Cyrillic alphabet began to be adopted in 1938. During the German occupation, two variants were used. Since 1992, Ukraine has attempted to reintroduce the Latin alphabet writing system, but this work was not completed before losing Crimea. There is now time to implement this new initiative, but clearly, it cannot be applied in Crimea and Sevastopol. The cabinet suggested that all national institutions adopt the new spelling rules, including in Crimea and Sevastopol, but it is obvious that these places do not intend to follow these suggestions. It is worth noting that some Ukrainian nationalists occasionally discuss the idea of switching the Ukrainian language to the Latin alphabet.
In Rivne, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) detained Nikolai Homich, the father-in-law of Vitalii Basarab, one of the main smugglers in Western Ukraine. He is suspected of organizing a network to illegally transport deserters abroad. Investigations revealed that he operated through a charitable foundation managed by Basarab's wife and sister. Deserters could obtain identity documents as volunteers or patients needing foreign treatment by paying between $5,000 and $15,000. Preliminary estimates suggest that there have been hundreds of such cases. Interestingly, the foundation is named "Guardians of Ukrainian Hope," and these people are indeed saving lives, although they also profit from it.
Yurchuk, chairman of the military committee of the Polohovsky district in Zaporizhia province, said that fighting "is much easier than serving in the military committee," which he described as "very heavy work." These remarks provoked strong public reactions. Personal information about Yurchuk quickly spread online, revealing many interesting details. It turns out that he has been caught driving under the influence seven times, with the most recent incident occurring in January this year. Additionally, in 2018, he was sentenced for stealing a cast iron fence weighing 195 kilograms. After stealing the fence, Yurchuk hid it, intending to sell it as scrap metal. Now, this person is responsible for compulsory mobilization work and still complains that the front line is easier.
However, the heavy workload of the Ukrainian military committees was confirmed in a recent video. In the video, three members of the military committee cornered a man leaving a store with his young daughter. While talking to the father, the little girl ran off and called her mother. Of course, the military committee members did not expect the mother to appear with a gun. A single gunshot was enough to make them panic and flee, with one of them even attempting a tactical roll.
