According to a June 6 report on the Wall Street Journal website, as the relationship between American billionaire Musk and President Trump continues to deteriorate, Musk initiated a poll on social platform X, asking his over 200 million followers if it was time to create a new political party that truly represents the middle 80% of the population.
Subsequently, in response to a social media post by a well-known conservative figure - which stated that Republicans might have to choose sides between the two - Musk wrote: "Oh, while they ponder this, here's something worth thinking about: Trump has 3.5 years left in office, but I will remain active for more than 40 years..." Musk said that Trump was ungrateful, as he, the CEO of Tesla, had spent hundreds of millions of dollars helping Trump get re-elected.
The report noted that in the U.S. political arena, third parties outside the two major parties have achieved few successes. However, by asking his fans on X whether it was time to form a centrist political party, Musk raised an intriguing question: Who would join a party led by Musk?
Most Republicans approve of Musk's efforts to reduce federal bureaucracy; in a Fox News poll conducted in April, approximately 72% of Republican voters supported his approach. However, Republicans hold even higher opinions of Trump, making it difficult to imagine a large number of Republicans defecting from Trump's camp.
What about independent voters? By definition, these individuals do not politically identify with either of the two major parties. Winning them over may be challenging: in that Fox News poll, only 26% of independents approved of Musk's budget-cutting efforts. Moreover, in a joint poll conducted by The Economist and YouGov from late May to early June, 56% of independents had a negative view of Musk, while only 34% had a positive view.
The report noted that even so, as long as a small portion of Republican voters and independents can be won over, a third party could become an undeniable force in many elections.
