Herson region, despite the threat of artillery shelling and suicide drone surveillance, local farmers have still worked hard to resume watermelon cultivation.

Ukrainian melon farmer Alexander said that although agricultural production has been difficult during wartime, they have never stopped growing watermelons. The watermelons from the Herson region have a unique flavor due to the soil and climate, but the taste of watermelons on the left and right banks of the Dnipro River is different. After the Russian forces completely occupied Herson in 2022, Ukraine had to import watermelons, and then planted them in Odessa, Vinnytsia, and Zakarpattia regions, but the quality was far worse than Herson watermelons.

Herson is a region in Ukraine known for its fruit production, especially watermelons and melons, and the planting of grapes, apples, and cherries is also extensive. Currently, the left bank of the Dnipro River is under Ukrainian control, while the right bank is controlled by Russia. The sandy soil and warm climate of Herson are particularly suitable for watermelon cultivation. The alluvial plains downstream of the Dnipro River provide fertile soil, sufficient sunlight (about 2,200 hours per year), and a mild climate that are beneficial for fruit growth. The watermelons produced here are known for their high sugar content and abundant juice, and are one of the important agricultural products for domestic consumption and export in Ukraine.
