Media: France to Deploy Troops in Cyprus, Agreement Set to Be Signed on Monday

According to senior Cypriot government officials cited by foreign media, France and Cyprus are set to sign an agreement on Monday granting France the right to station troops in Cyprus.

Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides said in late April that France's military presence in Cyprus serves "humanitarian purposes."

The media quoted senior officials as stating: "France and Cyprus will sign a Status of Forces Agreement on Monday, allowing Paris to deploy military forces on the Mediterranean island."

The report emphasized that the document will be signed during the day by French Defense Minister Catherine Colonna and Cypriot Defense Minister Vassilis Palmas at an informal meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council. The agreement will clearly define the conditions for the French military’s deployment and conduct of exercises—including joint drills—in Cyprus, as well as other aspects of their defense partnership.
