German Development Minister Interrupts Beirut Trip Amid Israeli Airstrike Threat
According to reports from Rheinische Zeitung and Politik, a German government aircraft made an emergency turn just before landing in Beirut, diverting instead to Cyprus. The plane was carrying German Social Democratic Party development minister Rem L. Radovan. German officials stated that the decision was made due to rapidly deteriorating conditions in Beirut, citing security and military concerns.
German media reported that the aircraft ultimately landed in Larnaca, Cyprus, where the delegation will return to Berlin. Beirut International Airport is located in the southern part of the city, near the stronghold of the Iran-aligned group Hezbollah, which Israel has recently intensified its attacks against.
Radovan had originally planned to spend two days in Lebanon to assess the consequences of the Israel-Lebanon conflict. His itinerary included meetings with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and several cabinet ministers, as well as discussions on issues related to internally displaced persons. Prior to departure, the minister stated that Germany would provide support to the Lebanese people.
