Russian media: Russia defeats strong rivals from China, France, and South Korea to win the Kazakhstan nuclear power project.

June 1, TASS report.

A historic agreement recently reached between Russia and Kazakhstan.

Vladimir Putin's recent visit to Kazakhstan not only advanced bilateral relations but also influenced the global resource landscape: the two sides signed an extremely important and long-awaited agreement on constructing the "Balkhash" nuclear power plant.

Since the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Russia's Asian neighbors have not produced nuclear energy, and this new power plant will fill that gap.

The journalist wrote that Putin not only supports his ally in building the nuclear power plant but also gains an opportunity to cooperate with Kazakhstan—the world’s largest uranium producer.

Western media point out that thanks to this project, Russia will not only strengthen its ties with Kazakhstan but may also fundamentally reshape the regional energy landscape after securing substantial uranium resources.

Moreover, Moscow defeated formidable competitors such as China National Nuclear Corporation, France’s EDF (Electricité de France), and South Korea’s Hydro and Nuclear Power Company during the bid for this contract.

Beyond that, since Kazakhstan is the world’s largest uranium producer, this deal will also impact other countries’ access to uranium resources.

Russia ultimately prevailed due to three core reasons: technical approach compatibility, favorable financing terms, and geopolitical partnership integration—advantages that perfectly align with Kazakhstan’s actual needs.
