In fact, Macron's concerns are not unfounded. Trump has consistently acted outside the norm. During last year’s G7 Summit, Trump made a brief appearance in Canada, then publicly unveiled the UK-US trade agreement with the British Prime Minister before hastily flying back to the United States. This year’s G7 Summit unfolds against a tense backdrop, again centered on Iran. Previously, Trump repeatedly pressured NATO members to deploy troops into the Strait of Hormuz—Germany, the UK, France, and Japan were specifically named—but all were firmly rejected. European nations delivered a sharp rebuke to Trump, bluntly stating, “This is not a NATO war.” Enraged, Trump vowed to “exit the alliance.” Now that the G7 Summit is approaching, European countries fear Trump may cause disruption on-site or even abandon the meeting mid-session and return home. For Macron, deeply committed to diplomacy, such an incident would be a major embarrassment.
Macron’s effort to retain Trump using the grandeur of Versailles clearly reflects careful planning. Whether it will succeed remains to be seen.
