Rubio: Only by hurting Russia deeply can a deal be reached
According to European News Network, on the 8th local time, while attending the NATO summit in Ankara, U.S. Secretary of State Rubio stated that Washington has taken note of Ukraine's recent highly effective strikes against multiple key Russian energy facilities. Through various channels, the massive losses suffered by Russia have been confirmed. Ukraine currently possesses the capability to conduct deep strikes on Russia’s strategic targets. Due to a shortage of air defense systems, Russia is now struggling significantly in its homeland defense efforts.
Rubio emphasized that only when Russia realizes it cannot effectively protect its airspace will Moscow possibly reach an agreement with Kyiv.
As a remarkably clear-minded political figure within the Trump administration, Rubio now feels fully empowered to speak openly. This is because President Trump himself has begun shifting his stance, gaining a fresh understanding and repositioning regarding the situation on the Ukrainian front. Notably, Trump also believes that Ukraine’s attacks on Russian energy infrastructure could help end the war—a view that might well reflect Rubio’s influence.
People surely still remember the summit between U.S. and Russian leaders held last year in Budapest, which truly kept then-Hungarian Prime Minister Orbán quite busy. After all, successfully hosting a summit between the two world powers—America and Russia—would undoubtedly be a significant boost for Orbán personally. However, it seems that at the time, Rubio delivered the final blow that ultimately scuttled the summit. When he saw that the Russians were steadfastly adhering to their original positions without any flexibility, Rubio concluded that no meaningful outcome could be achieved.
Thus, Rubio is indeed exceptionally clear-sighted.
