US Bombing Iran Triggers Strong Reaction from Germany

The US bombing of Iran has triggered a strong reaction from Germany. According to German radio reports, German Chancellor Merkel called for resolving the issue through negotiations. SPD politicians Steger and Mützenich criticized the US for launching a military strike.

After the US attacked Iran's nuclear facilities, Chancellor Merkel of the CDU convened a national security cabinet meeting on Sunday morning. A government spokesperson in Berlin announced this news. Merkel once again urged Iran to immediately engage in talks with the US and Israel. The conflict must be resolved through diplomatic channels. The German government believes that most of Iran's nuclear program was destroyed in the air strikes.

According to Reuters, Merkel has discussed the latest developments with French President Macron and British Prime Minister Starmer.

Christian Democrat deputy group leader Hart welcomed the US government's actions. He said that military strikes could set back Iran's nuclear program by several years. This, he stated, would benefit the well-being of Israel and the entire free world.

However, SPD foreign policy expert Mützenich told the Berliner Tagesspiegel that the world is now becoming less safe. His party colleague Steger told the Rheinische Post that this is not a good day for those who long for peace.

According to Bavarian radio, German political scientist and professor of international relations and geopolitics at Cologne University, Clemens-Fischer, believes that the US president may not have his own plan for bombing Iran but was driven by Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu.

International law expert Jochen von Bernstorff told DPA that the US attack "was clearly illegal." Von Bernstorff said: "Under international law, I see little room for justification. The Americans were not attacked themselves, so there is no case for individual self-defense."

A few German media outlets also issued comments immediately.

Bloomberg Businessweek believes: The US air strike on three of Iran's nuclear facilities is a historic intervention. Trump thus crossed a line that not only many of his predecessors had drawn but also one he himself had long drawn. His angry tweets, wars, and bombing threats against Iran during his first term are unforgettable. Fortunately, these threats were merely threats and did not lead to intense conflicts. However, during his current term, the US under Trump's leadership is dangerously approaching the situation he actually wanted to avoid: deep involvement in the Middle East war, becoming a direct accomplice in the conflict, which seems to escalate continuously but has never achieved a diplomatic breakthrough.

The Sunday edition of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung firmly believes: There should be no illusions about the nature of Iran's nuclear program. The leadership of the Tehran regime may not yet have decided whether to develop the ultimate nuclear bomb, but they are increasingly openly committed to the technical prerequisites for achieving this goal. As the International Atomic Energy Agency said: No country in the world can enrich uranium to such a high level, almost reaching weapon-grade level - at least until last week. But whether this war with Iran will strengthen the global non-proliferation mechanism remains uncertain. It is unclear whether Tehran's nuclear program can be permanently halted as a result.
