U.S. Treasury Secretary Highlights Iran's "Major Misjudgment": Harassing Neighbors Angers America

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said in a recent interview with Fox News that Iran made a "major mistake" in its confrontation with the United States—attacking its neighbors within the Gulf Cooperation Council.

Bessent revealed that previously, many of America's allies had been hesitant about cooperating with Washington on Iran’s financial assets, but "suddenly they became very compliant, willing to open accounts to us or assist in freezing them." Earlier reports from The Wall Street Journal indicated that the UAE had considered freezing Iranian assets within its territory.

He emphasized that while the U.S. has not overthrown the Iranian regime, it has "changed" the leadership by removing key figures. "They’ve seen what President Trump is prepared to do."

Bessent believes the current Iranian leadership has an opportunity to guide the country toward "normalization." He pointed out that Iran has been labeled a "rogue state" for 47 years, but "under President Trump’s push," Tehran is now willing to discuss giving up its nuclear weapons. "This is an opportunity for the Iranian leadership to try becoming a normal nation."

He also stated that the U.S. blockade of Iranian ports is both economic and physical. Key oil export terminals such as Kharg Island have already been blocked by U.S. forces, forcing Iran to begin dismantling oil wells. However, Trump previously announced the end of U.S. operations blocking the Strait of Hormuz.
