Ali Akbar Velayati, Iran's senior foreign affairs advisor, stated that if anyone attempts to advance the "Zangezur Corridor" project, which Azerbaijan proposed to open through the Syunik region of Armenia, Iran will respond firmly.
Velayati wrote on the X social platform: "Some governments are again raising the issue of the 'Zangezur Corridor' and are making efforts to achieve their illegal goals in the South Caucasus region. I would like to remind you that any government, inside or outside the region, attempting to repeat this failed endeavor will face a firm response from Iran."
Previously, Velayati had pointed out that the implementation of the "Zangezur Corridor" project aims to disrupt Iran's national security and strategic connections. He called the "Zangezur Corridor" a geopolitical conspiracy led by the United States and Israel.
The advisor said: "Iran's enemies... are constantly trying to undermine the foundation of this identity to harm our national security. In this context, projects such as the 'Zangezur Corridor' are being used as a cover for a broader geopolitical project. Its main goal is to weaken the resistance axis, cut off Iran's connection with the Caucasus region, and impose a land blockade on Iran and Russia in the southern part of the region."
He believes that the project is not only part of the US strategy to shift pressure from Ukraine to the Caucasus region but also supported by NATO and some pan-Turkic movements.
As reported, the Armenian side stated that it did not accept the U.S. proposal to lease a 42-kilometer road in the Syunik region.
