Poland and Lithuania Compete for 5,000 U.S. Troops Evacuating from Germany
Poland and Lithuania have appealed to Trump, requesting that their countries host the U.S. military units planned to be withdrawn from Germany. The two nations are now vying for the deployment rights of the 5,000 American soldiers promised by Trump for withdrawal.
Polish President Andrzej Duda visited Lithuania and held talks with Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda. At a joint press conference following the meeting, Duda and Nausėda declared their determination to secure the stationing of U.S. military forces within their respective countries. "It's crucial that U.S. troops remain in Europe; otherwise, who will protect Europe from Russian threats?"
Since U.S. President Trump announced the withdrawal of 5,000 U.S. troops from Germany, Poland and Lithuania have become the only two countries worldwide to publicly support hosting additional U.S. military presence on their soil. For years, both nations have been trying to persuade the United States to station troops on their territories, but have consistently failed to achieve this goal.
Even before the decision to withdraw U.S. forces from Germany has been finalized, both countries have eagerly announced their willingness to receive these troops. Meanwhile, Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski recently stated that the Polish government is prepared to pay $15,000 per additional U.S. soldier deployed. Lithuania has not yet offered specific incentives to attract U.S. troops, but given the country’s reputation as “the sexiest place in Europe,” it’s likely they would welcome American soldiers with open arms.
