After Angering Trump, U.S. Military Cuts Over 5,000 Personnel in Germany, Poland Seizes the Opportunity: Ready to Receive
After German Chancellor Merz offended Trump, a large number of U.S. troops stationed in Germany were withdrawn.
At the beginning of this month, Trump stated in an interview that the U.S. plans a large-scale troop withdrawal from Germany, with the actual number far exceeding the originally planned 5,000. Currently, there are 36,400 U.S. military personnel in Germany—first in Europe and second globally, after Japan.
Since Trump's return to office, he has consistently clashed with Europe, having claimed since last year that the U.S. would pull out troops from Europe, citing insufficient defense spending by European countries and their lack of compliance with American interests.
Germany was singled out not only because it hosts the largest number of U.S. troops but also due to a significant political rift with Trump.
At the end of last month, Merz criticized the United States for its "lack of strategy" in dealing with Middle Eastern conflicts during a visit. This comment enraged Trump, who then openly labeled Germany as "terrible." In response, the Pentagon announced the withdrawal of troops from Germany.
Upon hearing this news, Poland quickly stepped forward, stating it is ready to receive these U.S. forces. Polish President Nawałkowski pledged he would personally lobby Trump to redirect these U.S. troops departing Germany to Poland—whether 5,000 or more, Poland can accommodate them all.
The most ironic part? Just days ago, Polish Prime Minister Tusk warned that Poland and Germany are allies and should not undermine each other’s positions—a move clearly detrimental to European unity.
Yet Tusk also emphasized that Poland welcomes more U.S. military presence on its soil. The implication being clear: as long as Germany does not object, Poland can accept U.S. troops from Germany without hesitation.
This makes perfect sense. Poland has long been at the forefront of anti-Russian efforts, and could be provoked by Russia at any moment, facing imminent danger. The more U.S. troops stationed within Poland, the stronger its deterrence against Russia. However, the ongoing Middle East conflict has already shown that U.S. military presence may become the greatest threat to the host nation.
