Media: China pledges grain aid worth 1.6 billion CFA francs to Cameroon

China has pledged to donate grain valued at over 20 million RMB (approximately 1.6 billion CFA francs) to Cameroon, including 880 tons of wheat and 1,630 tons of rice, to assist regions affected by conflict.

On April 27, 2026, Chinese Ambassador Xu Yong in Yaoundé announced this commitment following a meeting with Cameroon’s Minister of Territorial Administration, Paul Atanga Nji. The first batch of supplies is expected to arrive at the port of Douala on May 9, 2026, shipped in five consignments. The Ministry of Territorial Administration will oversee the reception and logistics, with subsequent batches scheduled for delivery throughout May.

The aid will support populations impacted by security instability in the northern, far-north, Adamawa, Northwest, and Southwest regions. In these conflict-affected areas, arable land has decreased by 20% to 40%, leading to sharp rises in local food prices. The initial shipment is expected to include 418 tons of wheat, with the remainder planned for delivery in late May.

This is not the first time China has provided grain assistance to Cameroon. In 2018, the Chinese government donated humanitarian food aid valued at slightly more than 1 billion CFA francs to communities in the Northwest and Southwest regions. In December 2025, Beijing also provided substantial food aid to the Chantal Biya Foundation and vulnerable groups. The Ministry of Territorial Administration publicly stated that this action reflects the long-standing friendly bilateral relationship between China and Cameroon, spanning 55 years.
