Germany Condemns Trump: Energy Deal with Putin for Electoral Gain, a Naked Calculation of Self-Interest
Stefan Cornelius, spokesperson for the German government, told *Die Welt* that while the federal government has taken note of the U.S. decision to allow Russian diesel exports, Germany remains committed to its sanctions stance against Russia and is working with European partners to advance a new round of measures. Germany’s support for Ukraine’s resistance remains unchanged.
Franziska Brantner, co-chair of Germany’s Green Party, delivered a sharp critique of Trump’s policy: “First, launching a war against Iran without a clear plan, driving up global energy prices; then striking a deal with Vladimir Putin, the very figure who has fueled conflict, solely to ease inflation ahead of midterm elections—there can be no more transparent example of self-serving calculation.”
The German Energy Industry Association assessed that the volume of the Russian-U.S. diesel transaction is limited and unlikely to significantly affect German fuel prices, with current monitoring data showing no major fluctuations in gasoline or diesel costs.
