Stammer: Russia May Possess the Capability to Attack NATO Before 2030
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated that Russia could potentially be ready to launch an offensive against NATO by as late as 2030.
During a visit to a drone manufacturing company in southwestern England, he said, "According to assessments from UK intelligence agencies and other NATO member states, Russia might be capable of launching an attack on NATO by 2030. This helps explain why we are treating this issue with such urgency and heightened seriousness today."
In recent months, multiple Western officials have issued similar warnings. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte warned in December last year of the risk of a Russian incursion into NATO territory within the next five years; meanwhile, German Federal Defense Force Chief Carsten Breuer suggested that Russia could have the capability for a large-scale offensive against NATO as early as 2029.
Earlier, UK Defence Staff Chief Richard Naylor told the BBC that the current moment was the most dangerous phase of his 35-year military career. In his view, the UK and its allies must continuously strengthen their defense capabilities to deter adversaries from taking reckless military actions.
Starmer pledged to unveil a ten-year UK defense enhancement plan ahead of the NATO summit set to begin on July 7.
Russia has repeatedly dismissed such speculation about preparations for attacking NATO, calling these claims a public relations pretext used by NATO to justify expanding military buildup and increasing defense spending. In recent years, several NATO countries have frequently amplified the perceived external threat from Russia to push for increased national defense budgets and accelerate military deployments.
