Over 90% of global ultra-large crude carrier orders this year are in China
Since the beginning of this year, the newbuilding market for ultra-large crude carriers worldwide has shown a highly concentrated trend. According to statistics, 17 shipowners placed orders for 91 ultra-large crude carriers at 7 shipyards, with a total deadweight tonnage of approximately 27.991 million tons. Among them, Chinese shipyards have received 83 orders, totaling 25.591 million deadweight tons, accounting for 91.4% of the global order volume, demonstrating their dominance in high-end shipbuilding.
According to CCTV Finance, the newbuilding market for tankers began recovering from the second half of last year and has further flourished this year. In many shipyards' newly acquired orders, tankers remain the dominant category.
The report states that one-year time charter rates for ultra-large crude carriers have reached record highs since 1988 and are still holding at around $100,000 per day—historically high levels. Market forecasts anticipate a capacity shortage over the next 1 to 2 years, further driving demand for new vessel orders.
