General Motors CEO: Western Automakers Should Learn from Chinese Automakers Like BYD
General Motors CEO Mark Reuss recently said on the podcast program "InsideEV Podcast Plugged-In" that Western automakers must learn from Chinese automakers like BYD and accelerate the development of new models.
According to a recent report by automotive consulting firm AlixPartners, the typical product development cycle for Chinese electric vehicle companies is 22 to 28 months, while the development cycle for global automakers is 32 to 48 months.
Reuss said that Chinese automakers like BYD usually rely on the same suppliers and are able to quickly adopt new technologies. This allows them to bring new models to market quickly and at low cost. They compare, learn from each other, and put these technologies into production. This creates a very fast cycle. General Motors can "learn a lot from these new Chinese electric vehicle companies," he specifically mentioned their voice control and advanced infotainment systems.
General Motors is "absolutely" considering competing with Chinese automakers like BYD in the United States, but Chinese automakers have been subjected to high tariffs by the US government to prevent Chinese brands like BYD from entering the US market.
"I think we can learn a lot from their speed. I don't think it's good to imitate each other and try to push each other out of the market," Reuss said on the show. However, Western automakers should not try to copy the approaches of their Chinese competitors.
Due to the high tariffs imposed on Chinese cars by the United States, the sales of Chinese cars like BYD in the US market are almost negligible at present. However, American consumers are showing increasing interest in Chinese cars.
