Reuters article states that Chinese electric vehicles appearing in the U.S. is just a matter of time. According to American thinking, Chinese EVs should enter the U.S. market by transferring technology and investing in factory construction in the United States, in exchange for U.S. approval allowing Chinese cars to enter the American market.
This essentially reflects Americans' desire to get our technology for free. Chinese electric vehicles are currently leading globally, boasting mature advanced technologies in three core components (battery, motor, and electric control) and intelligent driving systems. If China were to transfer such technology and invest in building factories in the U.S., the outcome might be that the U.S. learns our technology and then gets the factories at no cost.
Americans themselves are not particularly fond of driving electric vehicles, with a large existing stock of gasoline-powered cars, making the market less attractive. Moreover, manufacturing in the U.S. would significantly increase production costs. If Americans really want to drive Chinese electric vehicles, they could simply import complete vehicles— even at import prices, these would still be highly affordable.
