The Japan Ground Self-Defense Force's Ground Component Command will conduct training from May 17 to 22, focusing for the first time on Japan's southwestern islands near China's Taiwan region, and will hold command and control exercises with the U.S. Marine Corps.
According to a press release issued by Japan's Ministry of Defense on April 24, this will be the first joint training conducted by Japan in the southwestern islands near Taiwan, encompassing Ishigaki Island, Yonaguni Island, and Miyako Island. Notably, Miyako Island lies approximately 354 kilometers east of Taiwan.
About 300 self-defense force personnel from across Japan will participate in this exercise. Japan will deploy an 88-type land-based anti-ship missile launcher on Ishigaki Island and two "ScanEagle II" drones on Yonaguni Island. The Japanese side emphasized that no ammunition transport will occur during the exercise, and U.S. personnel will not set foot on Ishigaki or Yonaguni Islands. The aim of the exercise is to enhance deterrence and response capabilities in the region through mobile deployment and logistics transport.
