The report said that 58-year-old Mthetwa is believed to have fallen from his room on the 22nd floor of the hotel. The Paris prosecutor's office stated that Mthetwa's wife "received a worrying text message in the evening," after which she reported Mthetwa missing to the French authorities. Due to concerns that Mthetwa might have committed suicide, the French police conducted a search in the woods in western Paris.
Reuters reported that the Paris police spokesperson currently declined to comment on this matter. A spokesperson for the South African Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that they "are aware of the unfortunate news about Ambassador Mthetwa" and will issue a statement once there is official information.
