The U.S. Department of Justice has identified 384 naturalized U.S. citizens born abroad who are slated to have their citizenship revoked, as part of an initiative to accelerate the "denaturalization" process. Civil litigation attorneys across 39 regional offices of the Department will soon be assigned tasks to file lawsuits seeking to revoke the nationality of these individuals. It remains unclear why these 384 people were specifically targeted. Under U.S. federal law, the government may petition a court to rescind someone's citizenship if it was obtained through fraud—for example, through a fraudulent marriage or by concealing background information that could have disqualified them from naturalization. Certain criminal conduct may also serve as grounds for denaturalization. The government must present evidence through civil or criminal proceedings before a federal judge, making this process complex and time-consuming.
