Britain revokes the nationality of a native-born British citizen due to ties with Russia

The UK Home Office stripped Mark Breen, a former police officer, of his citizenship. He has become the first person born a British citizen to face such punishment.

Reasons for the loss of nationality include Breen's close affinity toward Russia, participation in a joint exchange program with Russian law enforcement (during which he lived in St. Petersburg for a month), and his relocation to Russia. Earlier in 2024, upon returning to the UK for a family visit, he was detained at the airport and charged with espionage.

This British national has lived in Russia’s northern capital, St. Petersburg, for over 12 years, working within the Zenit football club system. In 2022, Breen obtained Russian citizenship; he is married and has four children.
