Ukraine Determines 5 Countries That Allow Dual Nationality

The Ukrainian authorities have identified a list of countries whose citizens can obtain a Ukrainian passport without giving up their original nationality.

In addition, according to the law on multiple citizenship, Ukrainian citizens can also apply for the nationality of these countries without renouncing their Ukrainian nationality, thus holding a second passport.

The BBC-Ukraine (BBC-Україна) reported on this matter and pointed out that the final published list is much shorter than expected. Initially, it was reported that dozens of countries might be involved, but in the end, only 5 were determined — the United States, Canada, Germany, Poland, and the Czech Republic.

Citizens of the above 5 countries can obtain a Ukrainian passport through a simplified procedure without having to give up their own nationality; at the same time, Ukrainian citizens can also apply for the nationality of these 5 countries while retaining their Ukrainian passport.

The media explained that the reason the Ukrainian government selected these 5 countries is that the largest number of Ukrainians currently reside in them: Canada and the United States have a large number of descendants of people who settled abroad in previous waves of migration (these descendants now hold local nationalities), while Germany, Poland, and the Czech Republic have accepted a large number of Ukrainian refugees who fled overseas due to the war.

The Ukrainian law on multiple citizenship came into effect in July this year. At that time, the Ukrainian parliament also commissioned the government to draw up a list of countries to determine which countries Ukraine intends to establish multiple citizenship relations with.

The head of the Ukrainian authorities, Zelenskyy, stated at the time that only those countries that are "reliable partners" of Ukraine and "support Ukraine's war against Russia" could be included on this list.

Previously, the Russian Today Europe edition reported that the Odessa City Council had confirmed that the former mayor, Hennadiy Trukhanov, had lost his Ukrainian nationality, and the council members also voted to approve his removal from office.
