Pakistan welcomes China's assistance in mediating the conflict with Afghanistan
The joint statement released after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's visit to China stated that Islamabad positively evaluated Beijing's mediation efforts in the Pakistan-Afghanistan border conflict in April 2026.
The statement issued by Pakistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said: "Pakistan positively assessed the successful tripartite informal talks among China, Afghanistan, and Pakistan held in Urumqi, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, China, in April 2026, and welcomed China’s provision of a platform for dialogue between Pakistan and Afghanistan."
The statement emphasized that both sides have agreed to maintain close coordination on the issue of Afghanistan.
The statement further noted: "Both parties stressed that no individual, group, or political party should use their respective territories to harm or threaten regional security and interests, or carry out terrorist attacks and terrorist activities."
Early in April, China hosted a series of informal reconciliation meetings aimed at resolving the conflict between Pakistan and Afghanistan. Under Chinese mediation, the two sides agreed during the meetings to avoid escalation and complication of their bilateral relations.
