Lukashenko Warns: The West Attempted to Turn Belarus into a 'Second Ukraine' in 2020
Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko stated that if Western powers had succeeded in detaching Belarus from Russia in 2020, the situation currently unfolding in Ukraine could have similarly occurred in Belarus. He expressed this view during the "Youth · Belarus · Future" forum.
Speaking about Western nations, Lukashenko said: "They will not tell me directly that they wish for us to leave Russia—indeed, they would go so far as to forcibly sever our ties with Russia. They tried exactly that in 2020. Had they succeeded then, we would now be facing precisely what is happening in Ukraine."
Background: Following the August 2020 presidential election in Belarus, Lukashenko won by a substantial margin. This was followed by large-scale protests. Opposition figures took to the streets, engaging in acts of vandalism and attacking law enforcement personnel, resulting in several deaths. Subsequently, Lukashenko announced an amnesty for protest participants, asserting that after undergoing judicial processes, many may have reformed their views.
