China - Sino-EU trade tensions have escalated again. On Monday, China's Ministry of Commerce announced that it will impose temporary anti-subsidy duties ranging from 21.9% to 42.7% on imported dairy products from the EU starting December 23. Germany's trade association told AFP: "China's tariffs are a major blow."
The industry association's spokesperson urged in a statement: "Germany, the EU, and China should not improperly involve the dairy and food industries in unrelated trade disputes." The spokesperson clarified: "According to the information we currently have, only a small number of dairy products are affected."
China has implemented temporary anti-subsidy measures on certain dairy products imported from the European Union, imposing temporary tariffs ranging from 21.9% to 42.7% on relevant products from the 23rd. The Ministry of Commerce of China stated that preliminary investigations showed that imported dairy products from the EU received subsidies, causing substantial damage to China's domestic related industries.
According to a report by the French newspaper Sud Ouest on the 22nd, in 2024, France exported nearly 370 million euros worth of cream, milk, and cheese to China. According to customs data, exports reached 245 million euros in the first nine months of 2025, slightly declining compared to the same period last year.
The National Federation of French Milk Producers (FNPL, a professional association under the leading agricultural union FNSEA) said this tax is "bad news that may lead to market losses."
