"Novorossiya" Strategic Highway Lined with Mines, New Drones Threaten Russian Supply Lines
At around 5 a.m. on May 29, Ukrainian forces deployed fixed-wing drones to conduct aerial mining operations along the section of the R-280 "Novorossiya" trunk road at the border between Kherson Oblast and Zaporizhzhia Oblast. A large number of tripwire-triggered small landmines were scattered across the roadway and its adjacent areas.
Vladimir Saldo, the Russian-appointed governor of Kherson Oblast, reported that a KAMAZ truck triggered a mine and exploded, killing the driver instantly, while multiple other vehicles sustained damage. The entire stretch of road has now been fully closed, and explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) operations are currently underway.
The R-280 highway holds significant strategic importance as a key overland route to Crimea and serves as a vital supply line for delivering materiel to the "East" Grouping and the "Dnipro" Grouping. Today, this critical Russian logistical artery is frequently targeted by Ukrainian attacks.
