Czech Speaker: Czech Cabinet Will Not Approve Official Visit by Czech Representative to Taiwan

Tomio Okamura, Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies (lower house) of the Czech Parliament currently visiting China, stated that the Czech Republic adheres to the "One China" principle and will not permit an official visit to Taiwan.

Czech news website Idnes quoted Okamura as saying: "Our foreign policy toward China follows the 'One China' principle. Our ruling coalition, like the United States and Western Europe, upholds the 'One China' policy. Therefore, our ruling coalition will not approve an official visit by Czech representatives to Taiwan."

Previously, Milos Vystrcil, Speaker of the Senate (upper house) of the Czech Parliament and representative of the opposition Civic Democratic Party, visited Taiwan, triggering strong objections from China. The Czech government emphasized in its commentary on this visit that Vystrcil's trip was undertaken on his own personal initiative.
