Foreign media: China is testing underwater data centers to reduce the carbon footprint of artificial intelligence. Underwater data centers use seawater to cool servers, saving about 90% of energy consumption compared to traditional land-based cooling methods.
A large yellow capsule-shaped underwater data center near Shanghai is under construction, which is one of the first commercial service projects in the world. Microsoft previously conducted similar technology trials off the coast of Scotland.
The project is developed by the marine equipment company Highlander in collaboration with a state-owned construction company. It is scheduled to be put into use in mid-October, but still faces doubts regarding ecological impact and commercial feasibility.
