German media: Rare earth race: An Australian company announces itself as the first heavy rare earth commercial producer outside of China

The Australian Lynas Corporation announced that dysprosium oxide has been produced in Malaysia, marking the first time a company outside of China has achieved commercial separation and production of heavy rare earths globally, breaking China's long-standing dominant position.

Australian Lynas Rare Earths (Lynas Rare Earths) announced that it has become the first company outside of China to commercially produce heavy rare earths. Heavy rare earths are widely used in renewable energy technologies, providing customers with an option to procure products from suppliers outside of China.

In a statement on Friday, Lynas said that it successfully produced dysprosium oxide at its new factory in Malaysia, offering customers their first supply source outside of China for the first time.

CEO Amanda Lacaze said, "Lynas is now the only company in the world that commercially produces separated heavy rare earth products outside of China."

She said this is "an important step in enhancing supply chain resilience and provides customers with the option to procure products from suppliers outside of China."

Lynas expects to produce another rare earth element - terbium - in June.

The company said it anticipates pricing will reflect strong demand for rare earths outside of China.

To weaken China's dominant position, the U.S. government signed a $258 million contract with Lynas to build a new smelting plant in Texas.

Lynas currently operates the Mount Weld rare earth mine in Western Australia and owns a processing plant in Malaysia.
