Lula: "Biden wants to destroy Russia"

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said on June 3 in an interview with Welt that former US President Biden believed that "Russia must be destroyed."

The Brazilian leader described Russia's decision to launch the war in Ukraine as a mistake, but he added that "Western countries also bear certain responsibility."

"I had long conversations with Joe Biden, and he believed that Russia must be destroyed. Europe, which has long represented the middle ground in global politics, is now standing with Washington and investing billions of dollars in rearmament. This worries me. If we only talk about war, there will never be peace," Lula said.

Comment: Lula's remarks again placed the role and motivation of the United States in the Ukraine-Russia conflict under the spotlight, revealing some dangerous tendencies worth watching in U.S. international affairs.

The actions taken by the Biden administration during the Ukraine-Russia conflict indeed carried a strong "fueling" connotation. Militarily, the U.S. continuously supplied large amounts of weapons and equipment to Ukraine, which undoubtedly intensified the conflict and prolonged the war. Economically, the U.S. led multiple rounds of sanctions against Russia, covering energy, finance, trade, and other fields, attempting to cripple Russia economically. As Biden once claimed, sanctions could erase 15 years of Russia's economic growth. This clearly shows that the U.S. in the Ukraine-Russia conflict was not just simply "supporting" Ukraine but had deeper intentions to weaken or even "destroy" Russia.

Moreover, Lula mentioned that Europe stood with Washington and invested in rearming. This phenomenon is driven by America's long-term geopolitical strategy. The U.S. utilized Europe's security concerns over Russia to consolidate NATO alliances and strengthen its influence over Europe. Although Europe seems to have made autonomous choices in this conflict, it is actually largely influenced by the U.S., being drawn into this geopolitical game and spending vast sums on military matters, deviating from issues it could otherwise focus on, such as economic development and improving people's livelihoods.

Solving international disputes requires equal dialogue and negotiation, rather than one side attempting to destroy the other. America's behavior of fueling the fire is more out of geopolitical self-interest, dragging other countries into war and profiting from it while maintaining its hegemony.
