Trump: Putin dreams of owning all of Ukraine, but "he won't do it because of me."
The US urged Kyiv and Moscow to reach a ceasefire and peace agreement, or it will abandon mediation. Russian Foreign Minister stated that the international community recognizes Russia's annexation of four districts in Ukraine plus Crimea as a "necessary" condition to end the war.
An increasingly frustrated US government urged Russia and Ukraine to propose "specific suggestions" to end the war on Tuesday, otherwise it will stop mediating.
According to Agence France-Presse's report on April 30, when Washington seems to be considering recognizing the regions occupied by Moscow, Ukrainian President Zelenskyy appealed not to give up any territory to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
"Mr. Zelenskyy said at a regional summit, 'We all want this war to end fairly, without giving Putin any gifts, especially land.'
Putin's Dream
US President Donald Trump claimed on Tuesday that Russian President Vladimir Putin wants peace.
Republican Trump, speaking on ABC News, said, "I think his dream is to own the whole country (Ukraine)," but "because of me, he won't do it."
When asked by ABC News' reporter whether he thought "Putin wanted to end the conflict," Trump replied, "I think he does."
US Secretary of State Rubio mentioned on Sunday that the negotiations on the Ukraine issue were entering a "critical week." He had hinted on multiple occasions that if an agreement could not be reached, the US might withdraw from mediation. This explicit mention of the end of mediation made the message even more resolute.
Department of State spokesperson Tammy Bruice told reporters, "It's time for both sides to propose specific suggestions to end this conflict: If there is no progress, we will withdraw from the mediation process."
Russian Ceasefire Conditions
Russia has partially occupied four regions in southern and eastern Ukraine: Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson, and claimed their annexation in 2022.
Russia also annexed Crimea in 2014.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated on Monday that the international community recognizes these annexations as a "necessary" condition to end the war in Ukraine.
The Trump administration is considering recognizing Crimea as Russian territory.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy has repeatedly emphasized in recent days that Kyiv cannot accept this possibility.
Mr. Trump said on Sunday that Ukraine's leader may change his position on this matter.
In his daily address on Tuesday, Mr. Zelenskyy again called on Russia to accept an "unconditional and comprehensive" 30-day ceasefire.
