According to reports by US Axios website citing sources, US President Donald Trump told Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during a meeting held on the occasion of the funeral of Pope Francis at the Vatican that he did not ask the latter to recognize Crimea Peninsula as part of Russia's territory and that the US would recognize it itself.
Reuters previously reported, citing relevant documents, that US Presidential Envoy Kurt Volker submitted a list of solutions to the Ukraine issue to European and Ukrainian sides during the Paris talks on April 17. The document suggested formally recognizing the legal status of Crimea Peninsula and the de facto recognition of Russia's control over the four regions; Ukraine promised not to seek NATO membership and proposed lifting sanctions imposed on Russia since 2014.
