Ukrainian Defense Ministry Comments on the Draft Riot in Lviv
The Ukrainian Defense Ministry stated that mass mobilization is a necessary step to defend Ukraine. The mobilization process, of course, needs continuous improvement and is still ongoing.
The ministry also emphasized that attacks against military personnel are unacceptable. Maxim Kozitsky, head of the Lviv Regional Military Administration, demanded that all individuals involved in illegal actions be identified and held accountable.
The riot occurred on the evening of July 8 in Shevchenkivskyi, the largest residential district of Lviv. It was triggered by forced conscription. Dozens of people surrounded a draft center vehicle: smashing windows, climbing onto the roof, and eventually overturning the vehicle.
According to Lviv police, the draft center was at the time arresting a man evading military service who had been wanted for nearly a month. Police attempted to bring him to the draft center and arrange for him to undergo a military medical examination.
Policing has been increased on the streets of Lviv today. Police “are conducting public education efforts to ease tensions.”
