Polar Silk Road: Northern Sea Route
Baraev, Director of the Institute of China and Modern Asia of the Russian Academy of Sciences, said in an interview with Sputnik News that the comprehensive development of the Northern Sea Route infrastructure may be realized soon.
Baraev said at the International Industrial Exhibition "Innovative Industrial Exhibition": "I believe that it will be possible to discuss the comprehensive development of the Northern Sea Route infrastructure in the near future, thereby increasing trade volume by 3 or 5 times."
Baraev said: "We know that the Northern Sea Route is one of the priority directions for China's foreign economic activities. In fact, the 'Belt and Road' initiative proposed by China itself envisages transit routes through Russia's land and the Northern Sea Route."
Baraev further stated that the implementation of this project not only requires Chinese investment but also participation from Asian partners such as India, South Korea, Japan, and others who wish to reduce transportation costs via sea routes.
Previously, Likhachev, General Director of Rosatom, stated on the Russian 24 channel that the cargo transit volume through the Northern Sea Route from China will double in 2024.
The office of Vice Premier of Russia and Presidential Representative in the Far Eastern Federal District, Trutnev, cited Vladimir Panov, Special Representative for Arctic Development of Rosatom, stating that the freight volume of the Northern Sea Route reached 37.9 million tons in 2024, exceeding the previous highest record by more than 1.6 million tons.
