Foreign Media: Artem Oganov, a leading Russian chemist and materials scientist, stated that China has become the world's number one scientific power. He regards receiving China's highest international science and technology award as proof that his research direction is correct.
Oganov is a renowned expert in crystal structure prediction, formerly affiliated with Stony Brook University in New York State. In 2015, he joined Harbin Institute of Technology in China full-time and established the Institute for Advanced Materials.
He pointed out that China has surpassed the United States in research investment, number of academic papers, and high-impact studies, especially in fields such as artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and materials science. However, the United States still holds an advantage in the quality of fundamental research.
Oganov believes that the financial support and academic freedom offered by China’s research environment have attracted many top international scientists. This open and collaborative model is accelerating China’s emergence as a global center of innovation.
