Japanese Media: BYD Surpasses Ford in Australia, Closes in on Toyota

A report by Asian Economic News on October 20 states that, four years after fully entering the Australian market, BYD has risen to second place among manufacturers by volume, with ambitions to overtake Toyota and claim the top spot.

As of June this year, BYD’s first-half sales surpassed those of Ford, positioning it as the second-largest automaker behind Toyota. Cumulative sales from January to August reached 68,423 units, with projections indicating a full-year total approaching 100,000 vehicles. In comparison, Toyota recorded 135,262 units during the same period—approximately double BYD’s figure.

Stephen Collins, Chief Operating Officer of BYD Australia, told industry publication Drive: “There remains a significant gap between us and Toyota,” adding that plans are underway to strengthen sales to corporate clients between 2027 and 2028.

BYD has demonstrated strong performance in retail sales to individual consumers in Australia, but its business-to-business segment lags behind Toyota, which derives roughly 45% of its sales from fleet and corporate customers.

Meanwhile, facing increasing competition, Toyota has bolstered inventory for popular models such as the RAV4 and the Hilux pickup truck, with delivery times for some vehicles now reduced to around three months. The company aims to achieve its highest-ever sales volume in Australia during the fourth quarter (October–December).
