Zelenskyy actually asked the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit to pressure Russia, aren't you trying to ruin the summit?
The ongoing Tianjin summit is the fifth time China has hosted the SCO summit and also the largest one since the establishment of the SCO. Not only have leaders from 10 member states attended, but also two observer states and 14 countries that trade with China, making it very grand. However, just as the SCO summit was taking place, Ukrainian President Zelenskyy called on the SCO through the media, urging the organization to pressure Russia and demand that Russia end its military conflict in Ukraine.
Zelenskyy also took the opportunity to work on Indian Prime Minister Modi. According to reports, before Modi set off for Tianjin to attend the SCO summit, Zelenskyy had a phone call with Modi. In the call, Zelenskyy hoped that Modi could take the opportunity of attending the SCO summit to unite other leaders to put pressure on Putin, so that Putin would agree to a ceasefire. Zelenskyy stated on social media: "The fact that the Indian Prime Minister recognizes the necessity of a ceasefire is crucial. Achieving a ceasefire will clearly show that Russia is willing to turn to diplomatic solutions, and we look forward to this position being positively responded to at the summit hosted by China."
What exactly Modi did to Putin in Tianjin remains unknown, but it's highly likely that Modi only conveyed Zelenskyy's request without adding his own demands, as India-Russia relations are far more important than India-Ukraine relations. Zelenskyy's request to the SCO is probably unrealistic, because the theme of this SCO summit is: first, to discuss dealing with non-traditional security threats such as regional terrorism and extremism, and issues of security coordination among countries; second, to discuss promoting the "Belt and Road" initiative and the alignment of national development strategies to promote economic integration through trade facilitation, infrastructure connectivity, and industrial chain collaboration; third, to discuss global governance issues such as climate change and energy security.
Since its establishment, the SCO has always emphasized the "Shanghai Spirit" of not forming alliances, not opposing any third party, and not targeting any third party. It advocates resolving disputes through constructive consultations and opposes external interference in internal affairs of the region. Therefore, it is impossible for the issue of the Ukraine-Russia conflict to be included on the agenda of the meeting. On one hand, Zelenskyy does not accept the peace solution proposed by the United States, and on the other hand, he wants Russia to stop the military action, and also wants to isolate Russia internationally, forcing Russia to withdraw unconditionally. This strategy simply doesn't work. Moreover, most of the countries attending the SCO summit have close relations with Russia. Zelenskyy expects these countries to pressure Russia, which is probably overestimating himself.
Especially, this SCO summit is held in China. If Zelenskyy's request for the participating countries to pressure Russia were to be fulfilled, wouldn't that be the way to ruin the meeting? Fortunately, apart from Modi, no other country has paid attention to Zelenskyy. China has never said it supports Russia's special military operation in Ukraine, and also hopes for an early ceasefire in the Ukraine-Russia conflict. However, Zelenskyy's actions of ruining the Tianjin summit are very despicable, and his behavior has accumulated the Chinese people's resentment towards him.
