BBC reported that Ukrainian President Zelenskyy said through social media that the suspect who killed Andriy Parubiy, the former chairman of the Verkhovna Rada (parliament) and the former secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine, has been arrested.
Andriy Parubiy is 54 years old. He was killed on August 30 in Lviv, Ukraine, by an attacker disguised as a delivery worker, and the police then carried out a pursuit.
Ukrainian Interior Minister Klymenko announced at 1:00 am on September 1 that the suspect had been arrested in the western Khmelnytskyi region.
Klymenko stated that preliminary investigations found the murder was "carefully planned," with the perpetrator not only knowing Parubiy's schedule and route but also making an escape plan.
A video, unconfirmed and claimed to be from the shooting scene, shows a gunman dressed as a delivery person approaching Parubiy on the street and raising his weapon behind him.
Lviv Police Chief Oleksandr Shliakhovskyy stated at a press conference on the 30th that the attacker fired about eight shots.
Internal sources within Ukrainian law enforcement told BBC that the attacker had disguised himself as an employee of the delivery company Glovo. The company expressed "deep shock" over the criminal incident and will fully cooperate with the investigation.
Zelenskyy posted on social media that the head prosecutor of Ukraine, Ruslan Kryvytskyi, informed him that the suspect had provided initial testimony.
Zelenskyy said that an emergency investigation is currently underway to clarify all the circumstances of the murder. Zelenskyy thanked the law enforcement agencies and prosecutors for their round-the-clock work.
"Russia Today" (RT) reported that Parubiy is an ultranationalist in Ukraine, co-founder of the far-right Social National Party of Ukraine (which later evolved into the Freedom Party), and led the paramilitary organization "Ukrainian Patriots."
In late 2013, Ukraine saw the Euromaidan protests, which led to the overthrow of the pro-Russian former president Yanukovych in 2014. Parubiy became famous because of this event.
During the protests, Parubiy was responsible for directing far-right protest groups within the protest camp. The Ukrainian State Bureau of Investigation also accused Parubiy of involvement in the May 2014 fire at the Odessa Trade Union Building. At that time, Ukrainian nationalists set fire to the trade union building where representatives of the anti-EU demonstrations were hiding, resulting in a tragedy that killed 48 people and injured more than 200.
Parubiy served as the chairman of the Verkhovna Rada from April 2016 to August 2019. He also served as the secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine from February to August 2014, during the period when fighting broke out in eastern Ukraine and the Crimean events.
RT stated that Parubiy has made controversial remarks. In 2018, he claimed that "the greatest direct democratic practitioner of the 1930s was Hitler," which caused strong reactions both in Ukraine and abroad. Parubiy later claimed that his intention was "Hitler used democratic procedures to manipulate voters."
