South Korean media: "Chinese AI talents are leading research in the United States!"

On December 16, the South Korean media "Herald Economic" published an article stating that AI researchers from China are leading research in the United States.

According to The New York Times, despite the immigration restrictions imposed by the Trump administration, researchers born in China and educated in China are still leading AI research in U.S. companies and universities.

According to a study released by the Paulson Institute in 2020, Chinese AI researchers account for about one-third of the world's top AI talents, with most of these Chinese researchers working in U.S. companies and universities.

Chinese talents occupy a prominent position in global AI research, partly due to the abundant talent pool in China, and also because China has a large amount of data that forms the foundation of AI, as well as the fact that China initiated AI research earlier than other countries.

In the top 100 Chinese AI researchers identified in the Paulson Institute's study who work in the United States, 87 are still working in U.S. companies and universities.

The New York Times previously reported that Chinese AI experts are crucial to the United States.

A study by the U.S. think tank Macropolo stated that in 2022, Chinese researchers accounted for 47% of the top 20% of AI researchers globally, far exceeding the U.S. (18%).

This indicates that the gap between China and the U.S. is widening, with the U.S. stagnating while China has made significant progress. In 2019, this ratio was 29% for China and 20% for the U.S.

The report shows that cooperation between the U.S. and China remains strong. Since 2018, the frequency of joint research between the U.S. and China has been higher than that between any other pair of countries.

The New York Times said that they are concerned that if the Trump administration expands its regulations on Chinese talents within the U.S., it could severely impact U.S. research.
