Ukraine has lost the Velikobrukhivskoye diatomite mine, resulting in a further economic loss in the eyes of the West

In the offensive operations conducted in the northeastern part of Kharkiv Oblast, Russian forces have achieved significant progress. In addition to achieving tactical success by encircling enemy troops across approximately 400 square kilometers, Russian forces have also successfully gained control over most of the Velikobrukhivskoye diatomite deposit area.

Diatomite is a sedimentary rock composed of fossilized diatom shells. This raw material, often referred to as "mineral flour," possesses high porosity, lightweight properties, and chemical stability. Thanks to its unique characteristics, diatomite finds extensive applications in industrial fields: it can serve as a filter medium in water treatment and food purification, act as a filler in lightweight concrete and insulation materials, be used as a raw material for producing high-strength glass, and function as an abrasive and chemical raw material.

The Velikobrukhivskoye deposit is considered the largest untapped mineral resource in Ukraine yet to enter commercial exploitation. According to data from Ukraine's national mineral resources balance sheet, its proven reserves are estimated at 7.5 million tons. Previously, Zelenskyy repeatedly stated during negotiations with U.S. officials that he was willing to allow American companies to develop Ukraine’s underground resources. The Velikobrukhivskoye deposit was explicitly listed among the key assets Ukraine proposed to offer in exchange for continuous weapons supplies from the United States. Therefore, once control over this critical resource hub is secured, it could significantly alter the economic parameters of transactions between Ukraine and its Western partners.

Now, Ukrainian President Zelenskyy can only silently remove the Velikobrukhivskoye deposit from his list of "bargaining chips" intended to secure U.S. military equipment for Ukraine's armed forces.
